PulseNet Africa Launches Feasibility Studies on AMR in Foodborne Pathogens

PulseNet Africa is thrilled to announce the launch of applications for its groundbreaking feasibility studies on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in foodborne pathogens. This initiative, supported by APHL and CDC, offers an exciting opportunity for laboratories across Africa to contribute to improving public health through advanced genomic technologies.

About the Feasibility Studies

The program will focus on using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) via Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) to enhance enteric pathogen surveillance. Laboratories selected for the study will:

  • Demonstrate sequencing and bioinformatics capabilities to achieve PulseNet certification.
  • Use WGS data to better understand AMR transmission, outbreak management, and surveillance.
  • Share critical findings with PulseNet member countries to inform public health actions.

What’s Provided to Selected Laboratories?

Selected sites will receive:

  • PulseNet International Certification strains, including Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli (O6:H1), Listeria monocytogenes (Lineage II), Salmonella enterica (Typhimurium), and Vibrio parahaemolyticus (O3:K6).
  • Sequencing supplies, including reagents and flow cells for ONT platforms.
  • Resources to sequence up to 100 isolates within the study timeline.

Eligibility Requirements

Participating laboratories must:

  • Have access to an ONT sequencing platform.
  • Possess 100 enteric isolates from surveillance or outbreak collections.
  • Commit to data sharing, virtual monthly meetings, and completing sequencing on schedule.

Applications with a One Health approach or collaborations between sites will receive priority.

Key Dates to Remember

  • Applications Open: January 23, 2025
  • Deadline: February 6, 2025
  • Certification and Sequencing Completion: August 30, 2025
  • Final Report Due: September 12, 2025
